Mark Pope, a 24 year veteran teacher of German and Social Studies from Utah, has discovered a new tool for helping his students master their foreign language vocabulary.

When learning a language, recent theory suggests that the place to start is vocabulary. Transparent Language has based their latest product on this theory. Before You Know It teaches one thing, vocabulary and teaches it well.

Before You Know It lets users see and hear the foreign language with native speaker pronunciation, and then leads the user through a proven, proprietary learning process. Before You Know It monitors the user’s responses and constantly adjusts to focus on the more challenging words and phrases.

“Before You Know It is simple, very user friendly, and is a powerful learning tool for my students,“ Pope said.
He started using it with 2/3rds of his class and found that students who had been middle of the road or doing poorly in the class have really benefited from the program.

“I had 7 students all failing because of vocabulary deficiencies and all of them received at least a "B" or higher. 4 had 100% after using Before You Know It,“ Pope said.
Pope has created lists from his textbook chapter vocabulary and has posted them on his website on the school’s server. The program also allows teacher’s to create a webpage at www.byki.com.

“It has become the foundation for learning in the chapter” Pope said. “And next year Before You Know It will be part of the core curriculum.”
Pope has recruited the other language teachers to start using the program as well and he intends to use it in his Social Studies classes next year.

“This program is great for learning dates and facts as well as foreign language vocabulary,” Pope said.
Pope kept track of his student’s test scores and the results after Before You Know It were significant.
